Chapter Eight
Aleta
I
feel an ominous sense of foreboding as I show up to school. There isn't anything really wrong, but it's a heaviness in the air.
"What's up with you?" Katelyn asks as we stand by her locker. "You're being quiet."
I think about telling her what happened and what I did, but it doesn't feel right. I don't want to tell her for some reason. It's not that I'm ashamed. It almost feels like I want to keep it a secret between me and Lowell. Something only the two of us and the carrots know about. When people eat the vegetable soup today and it's lacking half the carrots it usually has, only me and him will know why. I just hope Mrs. Tinson isn't blamed if someone complains.
"Nothing," I tell Katelyn. "I'm just tired. I stayed up doing a lot of homework. You knowâthe norm."
The feeling doesn't go away all through first period, and when an announcement comes over the intercom, I know it's going to be for me. I'm already standing up when my name is announced, calling me to come to the office. I just know Headmaster Radforde saw me naked and in that position with Lowell in the kitchen.
There are probably cameras in there that Lowell even knew about. I feel shame and anger as I walk slowly down the hall. When I reach the office, my heart is beating so hard that I think the secretary must see it.
The headmaster is sitting straight up at his desk when I walk in. I can't read his face. "Please sit," he says.
Now, my hands are sweating. I sit and wait for the bomb to drop.
"I want you to put in another thirty days in the cafeteria. I had a meeting with some of your teachers, and they feel more time there will help you feel the gravity of the changing of the grades. You think you can do that?"
"Yes," I say, just so relieved he didn't see me naked. I'll do anything to get out of his office.
"Great. Then, you're free to go," he says. With that, he's back on his computer and I'm up and out of the room.
I rush out of the office to find Katelyn waiting for me. She has her bookbag in one hand and a sweater in the other. No matter the temperature, Katelyn is always cold these days. I've noticed she's been on some new health kick and lost a little weight. Maybe that's why she's so obsessed with my eating habits lately.
"So, I have to tell you something," she says as we walk to her locker.
"Okay," I say. A minute ago, I planned on telling her about my mother being in Oregon, even if I've been on the fence when it comes to telling her about the kitchen.
"I know this is going to surprise you, but I can't keep it to myself any longer," she says.
I brace myself for whatever's coming, unclear about what she could possibly be about to reveal. "Okay.
